Could there be a more crowd-pleasing musical for children of all ages than Disney’s And Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins?

Forget practically perfect. Only someone as nitpicking as Mary Poppins herself could find nits to pick with the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh Broadway smash as produced to utter perfection by La Mirada Theatre For The Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment.

Mary Poppins The Broadway Musical has arrived at Cabrillo Music Theatre to enchant audiences of all ages, and though Opening Night was technically rough around the edges, this is one terrifically entertaining production, particularly with Juliana Hansen and Wesley Alfvin filling Julie Andrews’ and Dick Van Dyke’s shoes quite marvelously indeed.

RECOMMENDED

A pair of stellar lead performances, a topnotch supporting cast, and direction by the musical’s original leading lady bring out the best in the never-made-it-to-Broadway Busker Alley, Musical Theatre West’s Reiner Reading Series 2013-14 season closer. Still, despite some terrific Sherman Brothers songs, it’s hard to become invested in the story of as sad sack a lead character as street entertainer Charlie Baxter, even as played with abundant pizzazz by triple-threat extraordinaire James Leo Ryan.
