Chromolume Theatre offers Stephen Sondheim aficionados the chance to catch the rarely performed Pacific Overtures, and though the musical itself will probably never rank high on my list of Sondheim favorites, its many fans will find much to admire in this full-length intimate staging.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

There’s a new kid on the Garry Marshall Theatre block from now through December 10 as stage-screen-recording star Joey McIntyre takes on the lead in the Marshall’s deliciously entertaining, ingeniously streamlined staging of the farcical delight that is A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.

It takes brilliance and balls to pull off the reinvention of a musical theater classic, particularly one as renowned for its iconic choreography as for its book, music, and lyrics, but this is precisely what director Richard Israel and choreographer John Todd have accomplished in the brilliant, ballsy West Side Story they have mounted for The La Mirada Theatre and McCoy Rigby Entertainment.

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG

Broadway couldn’t do it any better than the breathtaking revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along now playing at Beverly Hills’ Wallis Annenberg Center For The Performing Arts, not unless they too could get recent Tony nominee Michael Arden on board to direct with the same originality and flair he brought to last season’s Spring Awakening or come up with a cast as spectacular as the one at the Wallis.
