MASTER CLASS

Carolyn Hennesy gives one of the year’s most dazzling performances as the legendary Maria Callas in the virtual one-woman-show that is Terrence McNally’s Master Class, the inaugural season opener of the newly rechristened, spiffily refurbished Garry Marshall Theatre.

THE FULL MONTY

The sextet of laid-off upstate New York factory workers with plans to offer Buffalo gals a night of full-frontal fun are centerstage once more as 3-D Theatricals debuts its couldn’t-be-better revival of the 2000 Broadway hit musical The Full Monty.

RAGTIME

The Ragtime revival currently touring the U.S. may not be the already trimmed-down Marcia Milgrom Dodge-version that scored the director-choreographer a 2010 Tony nomination. (The non-Equity cast is even smaller by 25%, the creative team behind its much scaled-down production design is new for the tour, and Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s songs are performed to prerecorded tracks.) KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN

RECOMMENDED

Kander and Ebb’s Kiss Of The Spider Woman is back in a rarer-than-rare revival at Santa Ana’s Theatre Out, news that would be a good deal more exciting were its leading lady a better fit for the title role.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

Actors Repertory Theatre Of Simi gives its audiences the best big-scale musical I’ve seen at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center in their sensationally entertaining mid-sized staging of Broadway’s 2011 Best Musical Tony nominee Catch Me If You Can, a production that requires no allowances to be made “for community theater.” This is topnotch work from start to finish, and a production any professional theater would be proud to call its own.

RAGTIME

Well-to-do early 20th-Century White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, their less fortunate African-American fellow New Yorkers, and a gaggle of fresh-off-the-boat Eastern European immigrants collide to life-altering (and occasionally life-shattering) effect in the 1998 Tony-winning musical Ragtime, now being revived by 3-D Theatricals in a production that would do any Broadway theater proud.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

Moonlight Stages closes its Summer 2014 season with the Southern California Regional Premiere of Catch Me If You Can, and if the musical adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s popular 2002 biopic “underperformed” during its less than half-a-year on Broadway, you’d be hard-pressed to figure out why it wasn’t a humungous smash from the sensational goings-on down in Vista under the inspired direction of Larry Raben.
